EMPLOYMENT AND EMPLOYEES

1. Employment of disabled persons It is the policy of the Bank that there should be no discrimination in considering applications for employment including those from qualified disabled persons. All employees whether or not disabled are given equal opportunities to develop. As at 31 March 2005, there were 6 disabled persons in the employment of the Bank.

2. Health, safety at work and welfare of employees
Health and safety regulations are in force within the Bank’s premises and employees are aware of the existing regulations. The group provides subsidies to all levels of employees for medical, transportation, housing, etc.

3. Employees’ involvement and training
The Bank is committed to keeping employees fully informed as much as possible regarding their performance and progress and seeking their views wherever practicable on matters, which particularly affect them as employees.
Management, professional and technical expertise are the group’s major assets, and investment in their further development continues.

The Bank provides in-house training and manpower development for its employees who are equally encouraged to improve on their individual technical skills, professional or academic standard. 
Incentive schemes designed to meet the circumstances of each individual are implemented wherever appropriate and some of these schemes include bonuses, children education grants, scholarship, etc.

Donations made during the year amounted to N29,946,704 (2004 = N24,200,190) details of which are stated below. No donation was made to any political organization.

Computer Equipment to two Universities and one Polytechnic - 16,054,750

National Committee on the review of Banks - 2,500,000.00

Bank's Chief Executive Forum - 1,575,000.00

LUTH - Water Ditiller(2) for Hematology - 1,330,000.00

Sponsorship of Nigerian Cup Golf Tournament 2004 - 1,000,000.00

Made in Nigeria Exhibition Sandton Centre, South Africa - 670,000.00

 

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Union Bank has continued to demonstrate its social responsibility in various ways by identifying with worthy causes in the host communities where it does business. In this regard, the Bank gives financial and moral assistance to a number of social and community-based activities such as sports development, education and co-sponsorship of some national events. The Bank has at various times made contributions to:

  • Enugu Sports Club

  • Sponsorship of Lagos Country Club Annual Tennis Tournament

  • Donation of computers to Higher Institutions

  • The hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM)

AWARDS
