In a creative approach to supporting women-owned businesses and providing convenience to #TeamUnion, our women’s banking proposition-alpher recently organized a souk right within our head office premises, allowing employees to shop directly from women entrepreneurs.
Launched in 2020, alpher is Union Bank’s flagship gender-focused initiative aligned with the United Nations’ SDG 5 (Gender Equality) goal designed to empower, support, and enable the Nigerian woman whether she is an entrepreneur, a working professional, or a homemaker. alpher provides tailored loans, and savings plans for women entrepreneurs and professionals, access to credit facilities with fewer barriers (e.g., reduced collateral requirements), special banking packages and advisory for female-led businesses, capacity-building programs such as training, mentorship, and masterclasses on entrepreneurship and personal finance. alpher women also enjoy networking opportunities with other women in business and leadership, advisory services for growing businesses or transitioning careers. alpher is a digital and offline community where women can learn, grow, and collaborate.
In Nigeria, SMEs contribute approximately 48% to the country’s GDP and account for more than 50% of industrial employment. By supporting women-owned SMEs, alpher is not just empowering individual entrepreneurs, it is contributing to national economic growth and development. The alpher fair is an internal marketplace concept that served multiple purposes. It provided women entrepreneurs with immediate access to a concentrated customer base, offered employees convenient shopping opportunities and demonstrated our commitment to supporting women in business.
Supporting businesses does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes, it just means creating space. By opening our doors and purses, we turned our office into a commerce platform. #TeamUnion shopped, connected, and championed the work of incredible women right within the workplace.
